Interview with Oscar L about his EP Konfusion
Oscar L’s Konfusion is out on Truesoul.

How are things going these days?
Actually, I’m really busy, working on new tracks and collaborations in the studio, working on a new set-up for my DJ-sets and trying to have a “normal” life with the tidy schedules. 🙂

For fans who don’t know much about you, could you tell us a bit about your music background? How did you fall down the music rabbit hole?
I fell in love with music a long time ago at the age of fourteen … . I listened to a lot of radio shows here in Madrid. While listening to these mixes, I asking myself how they did it, mixing all these tracks. This was the beginning for me.

For all those that don’t know me, I’m a Spanish DJ and Producer. I had the pleasure of signing my music on some big labels like Truesoul, Suara, Tronic to name a few and to be part of the Stereo Productions team.

I have been playing on many great events and in clubs around the world like The BPM Festival, Space Ibiza, Output NY, Heart Miami, Mystic Garden Festival (Amsterdam), Sankeys …

My music style is not easy to tag, I like good music and I have a lot of influences. For that reason, I’m trying to mix and play what influences me in my sets. You can also notice this in my productions.

When did you start DJing/producing – and what or who were your early passions and influences?
I started to DJ at the age of fourteen as mentioned, playing progressive and trance and old techno tracks. After winning a DJ contest in my city I started to work in a Radio Station and I met a guy who introduced me to a producer with knowledge of the music industry.

How would you describe your sound and style?
It could be a mix of techno and tech house with some pieces of melodies and vocals.

You recently released an EP on Truesoul, “Konfusion”. A package of three energetic punches. Want to tell us a bit about it? Production-wise, inspiration-wise. How did this release come together?
Truesoul is one of my favourite labels for a long time. I really wanted to sign a record with them. So about a year ago, I started to work on it. I did “Together” but then I wanted to use the synth I used in another track that’s been released on Suara. For the new EP I added a little more a touch of techno. So this is the idea behind “Konfusion”.

“Synesthesia”, the last track on the EP, was something that I wanted to try. A powerful bass with a crazy Sub37 synth, and I I think this came out very nice! 🙂

What makes this release different than previous releases?
This EP is a break on the tech house scene, right now it’s a bit more “commercial” or house and this tracks make you come back to the real underground tech house.

What do you want the audience to feel when listening to these tracks?
They should just listen and let the magic happen 🙂

Any reactions already?
3 tracks on Beatport tech house chart, supported in charts of many of the big players and appearances in sets of those as well. I’m so happy with this work.

Different label, different sound? How much does a label affect your production process?
If you want to release a track on Drumcode for example, you know you cannot try to come up with a deep house track. You have to do what you feel is best but you do need to have a knowledge about what kind of sound a label is releasing. Make sure your work can fit in.

Besides “Konfusion”, what other releases have you planned for that you can tell us about? Like when and on which label maybe?
I have new work with Chus & Ceballos which will be released on Stereo Productions soon.

Everyone is starting out somewhere. What were the first types of music you tried to make?
Trance, my first release on vinyl was trance music, I did a lot of trance many years ago and even some tracks were played for Paul Van Dyk, Armin and Ferry Corsten.

What skills/personal attributes are most important to being successful, you feel?
Constancy, I think is the most important.

How do you connect with your fans in the on and offline world?
I’m not a social media guy, I like to post pics and videos but to be honest It’s something that I should improve.

Anything you want to tell our audience about D-mix, your radio show?
I’m so happy about D-mix. It’s broadcasted on 90 radio stations around the world, FM and Online. I have many of the big talents and new artists twice a month. And the other weeks I broadcast my sets recorded live in clubs or on festivals.

Name the one track in your crate that gets the dance floor moving every time.

What is the last thing you saw or did that made you laugh out loud?
It was a stupid video on Facebook, talking about a couple of which the boy doesn’t have any social media profile. It drives the girl crazy because she can’t tag him on any of her pics …

Thank you !!
