Blixa

Blixa bringing the sound of the UK

Music has always played a major role in Blixa Aguerreberry’s life mostly due to his dad and his massive CD collection, that exposed him to so many different genres and always kept them long car journey’s interesting. He first got involved with music as a promoter/event planner having co-founded POLAR, a music collective based in his university town Brighton, while slowly working on finessing his craft on the decks and finding his sound in production in the background.

Blixa: Q&A

Where are you from?
I am originally from Buenos Aires in Argentina but moved to London when I was about 5 and have been based between here and Brighton since.

What do you find inspirational about where you are living?
You can’t really pin point it to one specific thing when it comes to a city like London, as it’s just so big that at any moment or in any space there could be something to inspire you. Probably the diversity of the sounds that come out of London is what inspires me the most… the way you can easily get lost in the wide range of musical cultures that come out of the city which contributes highly to that ‘UK sound’.

All of this is enforced by the rich club culture London has. Although it’s had it’s ups and downs in recent years there’s still a lot to celebrate and a lot of potentials. As soon as I was 18, I was spending most of my weekends in clubs like Fabric, XOYO and Corsica. The acts I was able to see in these clubs definitely marks a major influence on the music I produce and play today, from seeing Sasha at my first ever night at Fabric to catching both Simian Mobile Disco’s and Oneman’s residencies at XOYO… there was a lot to take in!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
Well currently I’m finishing off a degree in Product Design, and I think I will always be involved in a job that is design based, but it would be ideal for the design work to be involved with the music industry in one way or another. I would like to think that in 5 years time I have a couple releases that I can be really proud of while still putting on events and playing alongside some of the finest talents in the scene.

How would you describe your sound and style?
I would say that my sound is a lot deeper and melodic at times, as others often comment on my ‘spacey’ vibe. I love songs with weird, unconventional and random sounds or when they use instruments that you wouldn’t necessarily associate with electronic music but somehow it works perfectly. And in terms of style, I definitely don’t like to stick to just your standard 4/4 beats, I like to weave between different drum patterns and genres as I feel like it creates a more varied story.

What can we expect from your mix?
When putting together this mix I wanted to pay homage and collate together the sounds that I hear coming out of the UK the most at the moment and that I ultimately love playing. There’s a lot of weighty bass-lines and euphoric melodies at times which flow through a collection of dub, electro, breaks and techno tracks.

What is your absolute favourite track of the moment?
Ah this is a hard one there’s a lot of good music at the moment but if I had to pick one right now it would be Jeigo’s new release ‘Pearl Leaf’. The track builds so smoothly over a two-step rhythm that just makes the track roll so perfectly.

Cheers,
Blixa Aguerreberry
