ADWER about Sierra Sierra 1.5.3.0. : interview & guestmix

Adwer brings a blend of techno/electronica on his new release

Bolygó Records hits release number four with another fantastic offering entailing a blend of techno/electronica tunes. This time Adwer is the producer behind the beats and he is a Hungarian born but Barcelona based producer who is busy building catalogue for his own imprint. He plays live with a range of proper hardware tools and brings that same innovation to his music.

“Sierra Sierra 1.5.3.0” is the tense and cosmic opener which voyages to the edge of the galaxy with sci-fi synths, deriving drums and real cinematic style. The brilliant Alfa Whiskey Tango is a dark and deep bit of dub techno with spacey atmospheres in the drawn-out pads and real texture in the sewed synths. It’s heady as well as physical and then Sierra Sunrise gets much more melodic and dreamy with its thoughtful pads, supple rubber drums and intergalactic energy.

An excellent Alisa Hypno dub of Sierra Sierra strips it back to super supple minimal techno with spoken word vocals bringing the feeling that you’re on a spaceship flying through the universe.

All in all an excellent EP of storytelling house and techno. We caught up with this master to talk about this stunning release.

Adwer, in-dept

How are things going these days?
Wonderful! We are stepping into the month of August, my favourite one. Summertime, partying, beach & lots of fun! Late night, making music with the AC on.

Congratulations on your “Sierra Sierra 1.5.3.0” release. Please walk us through the creative process and the inspiration behind it!
This EP was started out with that shortwave radio recording that I found while I was scanning for weird signals. The main arpeggio and all other important parts of the tracks are made with my Analog Four mk2 synth, most of the sequences and main parts I lay out on this synth in the past few months and this allows me to play the tracks live with great flexibility.

Is there a particular way you want your music to make people feel?
My goal is to make people feel the same what I feel when I hear music that I like a lot. I feel blessed that I am so passionate about music – I get goosebumps, endorphin rush, and sometimes even tears of joy. When it comes to technical tracks, my goal is to get my peers or fans to appreciate the work that was invested in the sonic aesthetics of the music.

For fans who don’t know much about Adwer, could you tell us a bit about your music background? Did you see this all coming?
I personally feel that it is not coming yet, but it will if I mention that I composed the first track (that I could call a music piece) on a computer in 1993, I guess I have quite a history, I have witnessed all the revolution, sold my hardware synths, started doing all in the box, only to buy synths again some 15 years later.

If we are not mistaken, you took a break in your musical endeavours. Want to talk about it?
That’s correct. Despite my early start, I stopped making “tracks” around 2003 due to a terrible loss of a family member. I was only making short music productions since I was working at a creative agency. Later, I got into competitive cycling. The date of my true restart of music making is the summer of 2012 when I quit racing bikes.

Do you feel there was a “breakthrough” point after which suddenly things changed for the better and brought you to where you are now? If so, what was it and why do you think it happened?
No, there wasn’t. Whatever happens with my musical career, due to the factors explained earlier, this is a very, very long process, even with my long break included. Any fruits I might be reaping in the future, is not going to be an overnight success.

What are currently your main challenges as a DJ? What is it about DJing, compared to, say, producing your own music, that makes it interesting for you?
I love DJing because I can play music that really inspires me, and I consider myself a quite picky selector. Trying to find a sweet spot between the not too abstract techno that very few people understand, and not going overboard with cheesy ones. At the moment I mostly play live sets, where I play my own productions, and this is very exciting. However, I really liked playing ‘hybrid’ sets, where I would play a mixture of my stuff live / DJ set and real-time remixing of tracks I love from other artists.

What do you say to aspiring creators out there trying to find their voice and identity as artists?
I know I would be repeating what other really inspiring producers/DJs have said already: if you are trying hard to sound like a current trend, you are already too late. I adore artists that dare to sound different – my interest in techno/electronica is the constant evolution. Unfortunately, about 70% or more of the tracks I am hearing, is built around formulas. Young dudes trying to get a shortcut and become basically a one-hit wonder – and as I can see it actually works quite often. It results in touring and remixing, therefore we can call it success – however, what’s left is usually a bunch of tracks that are built out of the same template. So, in short: no templates, no cliches, no rip-offs, no formulas – at least if you want to make critically acclaimed music.

What’s you’ve got planned for the year ahead? Any new music or collaborations we should know about?
It’s just about time to mention that we (Bolygó Records) have just rolled out the promo of my next release, a heartwarming nostalgic melodic EP called “Son of the Sun” that includes a great remix by Few Nolder. Quite different from the previous releases, it’s a release with an earworm/late summer anthem potential! Due to be released a day before my birthday, August 27th! Stay tuned!

Thank you!
Thanks
