K.A.S.H

Interview: K.A.S.H shares what and who influences his own sound

Made of Kings II

Known for his unpredictable yet distinct sound, K.A.S.H is a Canadian producer whose works have graced a host of great labels, from Ovum to Get Physical. His latest release, however, is a very special one indeed. Entitled Made of Kings II, it’s a full length that’s a very curious proposition, with a host of remixes of a bunch of K.A.S.H originals.

What makes this album that bit different is that in the main, the remixes are done by the man himself under a host of different aliases. Touching on deep house, techno and tech house sound, it’s a long player that brilliantly displays the production nous of the individual involved.

Influences

As a DJ, K.A.S.H has shared stages with the likes of Nina Kraviz, Tale Of Us, Claude VonStroke, and Lucy, so it’s obvious that it’s not just as a producer where his diversity is seen as a valued commodity. But what and who exactly influences his own sound? We checked in with the Vancouver-based artist recently to find out more.

1. Ricardo Villalobos

“Ricardo Villalobos has a style that has been imitated so many times, but not recreated. Ricardo’s tracks are always a sure trip. They make you wonder about the possibilities and layers that can be added onto a track. He hits frequencies and grooves like no other producer.”

2. Ben Klock

“One of the first producers that I heard that involved female vocals on techno tracks and make them sound just right. His simple approach to production with distinctively rare depth has me playing Ben Klock tracks for a decade. I was just starting to DJ and finding my own style when I heard this song from Ben, became a fan and student ever since.”

3. Len Faki

“This is one of the crispest sounding drum patterns in all of techno for me. Always carrying a Len Faki track in my arsenal.”

4. Radio Slave

“A Minimal Techno wizard. This track was on one of my first ever mixes. I’ve seen the evolution of Radio Slave over time, there hasn’t been a release that I haven’t got.”

5. Nicolas Jaar

“Nicolas Jaar opened my eyes to a bridge in electronic music to slower, deeper and soulful realms. A real maestro of our time.”
