TGMS Future Stars #39: Ben Deeper

Ben Deeper is one of the few young talents who can show up the long-spanning career in the deep progressive music industry whose cinematic sound is influenced by synth pioneers like John Digweed, Guy J, Sasha and many more!

Ben Deeper (real Name: Majdi Ben Kraiem) as known by “Dj Massymo Tn” was first attracted to electronic music in his teens when he started listening to Armin van Buuren, Sasha live gigs and also DJ Danjer radio shows on the Tunisian radio “Mosaique fm“.

From that period Majdi dreamt to be one of the rising DJ’s/producers all around the round and bring his special touches to electronic music! In 2008, with the help of his friend who was a DJ as well, Majdi got his first gig in front of a crowd at “Ez Zahra” beach. That same year he was fortunate enough to have some dates in a small club in Tunisia playing some deep and progressive and sometimes trance music. Two years later it was time to produce his own music and started with tech house and deep tracks. His first release “Night groove” was in out in 2010 and signed to “White island recordings” under the alias “DJ Massymo Tn”. It reached the top 100 tech house releases on Beatport! Massymo continues to produce tech house music and gets signed to some big labels like “Get high music”, “Underground avenue” and “Get physical music”.

Majdi’s early influences were rooted in his homeland and the worlds of trance and progressive. But it wasn’t long before he embraced all genres to establish the wide-ranging production style that represents the array of emotions fuelling his creativity so he decided to finally change his musical style. So in 2013, he signed his first progressive house release “It’s just the beginning” with Mistique music and peaked at the number 49 spot on top 100 progressive house releases on Beatport.

The rest, as they say, is history. Majdi finds himself ranked N# 10 In Tunisia as a DJ/Producer by TOP DEEJAYS Web Site that he motivated him to continue producing successfully progressive/trance music under his alias “Dj Massymo Tn” and get signed with big labels like “Blue Soho recordings”, “Alter Ego records”, “Pulsar recordings”, “AEZ recordings” and gets support from many artists.

Where do you come from?
First, I want to thank you for having me and to have the opportunity to introduce myself more to the world and the lovers of electronic music. I’m Majdi Ben Kraiem more known as Ben Deeper, DJ and producer Based in “Tunis” exactly from Ben Arous Area, in the capital of My Country Tunisia.

Tell us about what makes your area special and how nightlife looks like.
After the last 5 years, Tunisia has seen an evolution of electronic music in the clubbing scene. We’ve seen most legends here to perform: Solomun, Joseph Capriati, Stephan Bodzin, Ame and many more.

Actually, you don’t need to be a DJ to know that Tunisia is blessed with some of the finest clubs and nights out on the planet. Whatever your taste in music is and whatever kind of party you’re looking for, Tunisia has a lot to offer. We have some incredible venues: from intimate spaces that host full-on techno parties to vast, globally acclaimed clubbing institutions. You’ll never get bored when partying in the city and some of them are rated in the top clubs of the world: Terminal 2B, Bora Bora, Guitoun.

What have been the main influences that got you started with electronic music?
Music has been one of my biggest influences and an escape from all the negative vibes in life. Music is the only source to make me feel powerful … I used to listen to cassette tapes on my parent’s hi-fi system. Also, I was listening and watching to Armin van Buuren, Sasha, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo, Solomun when their live gigs got uploaded on Youtube.

Not to forget, a source of inspiration from the one and the only Assali Nejib, known as DJ Danjer and his radio show at “Mosaique fm”. When I started, I was trying to make similar sounds to those I’m influenced by (deep progressive and trance music). The tools I was using were very simple. With time and experience, I found the right instruments and synths that I became comfortable with and I tried to find the environment that is right for me to create my own sound and style.

What skills/personal attributes are most important to be successful?
If you really want to bring success into your life and your career, firstly you should stay away from people who have a negative effect on you. You simply cannot surround yourself with negative people and expect to live a positive life.

For me a successful artist needs to be persistence in the following things:
• Improve and/or perfect skills in music production
• Learn new mixing skills
• Build an exceptional structure of a track
• Build a successful art career
• Always come up with original ideas, learning how to present them in original ways.

Most of these are long-term endeavours; some are developed over the course of a lifetime. If you don’t have the persistence to fuel your dreams, your dreams may never become true.

How would you describe your sound and style?
After the vast history of sounds and tracks I’ve heard throughout my life, I’ve created a unique style in making music that has a message with a deep melodic groove. Almost every track I create reminds me of a moment. I get inspired by things and occurrences in my daily life and from my surroundings!

I’m not attached to any electronic music style. I make groovy beats with melancholic and deep melodies which I feel comfortable and related with. But generally, I can say I’m a deep and melodic & progressive techno producer.

What can we expect from the mix?
In this mix, listeners will find my personal taste in music and what I like to play. It’s a mix of melodic and groovy techno. At the start quite deep techno with a lot of ambiences to build an atmosphere and progresses that doesn’t stop until the last track to get more powerful. It includes an exclusive promo of my new deep house track “Consciousness” as a little gift for Tanzgemeinschaft’s readers and listeners.

What news do you have for the year ahead?
Actually, soon I will release my first artist album on my own label “Elevated”. It includes collaborations with some great names in the melodic techno scene. On top, my remix for Stephan Bodzin’s track “Odyssey” will be released the 5th of the next month.

Also, I’m so happy to be part of the Amsterdam Dance Event this year and its an honour for me after hard working years to get the chance to play in such awesome and famous events like this.
