Oddball Creatives Unleash ‘Wondering & Wishing Like Me’

Oddball Creatives, the stellar production partnership of singer songwriter Joseph Malik and co-producer, musician Daniel Walls, return with a new single on Echo Labs titled ‘Wondering & Wishing Like Me’. Their circle of regular collaborators join forces on this release as US vocal talent Kameela Waheed brings her unmistakable vocal presence alongside Joseph’s rediscovered vocal performance. Jazz musician Colin Steele adds his sublime award-winning trumpet work, Darren Morris layers Hammond and Wurlitzer textures, and ENIA completes the picture with lush backing vocals. The track’s jazzy swing has already caught the attention of soulful tastemakers including Craig Charles on BBC 6Music.

Oddball Creatives first appeared with ‘Only Fans’, later remixed by X Press, followed by ‘Adult Contemporary’. Malik and Walls then focused on producing Kameela Waheed on standout releases including ‘My Whole World’ and ‘Be A Lion’. Everything shifted when Malik was diagnosed with stage 4 lung disease and lost his vocal cords. During that period he found an old vocal take recorded years earlier at the Young Fathers studio. He brought it to Walls, sparking months of work across different cities. The result is ‘Wondering & Wishing Like Me’, a soulful and hearftfelt groover where Joseph and Kameela blend melody and spoken word with a nod to the Native Tongues soul hip hop movement while keeping the sound current. Joseph Malik’s story runs deep, from his MF Outa National release on MoWax Records in 1994 to his Café Graffiti Lizard Lounge nights and acclaimed albums on Compost and Ramrock. Daniel Walls, formerly Digital Liquid, built his reputation blending live instrumentation with electronic dance floor elements. Kameela Waheed’s background spans house rooted singles and collaborations across Defected and Nervous. Colin Steele is a leading figure in Scottish jazz with a long list of awards and landmark projects.
